    How Netflix Uses Machine Learning

    Netflix Recommendation Engine

Netflix has become the largest TV streaming provider with over 220 million subscribers in 190 countries. Containing a consistent stream of over 4,000 programs, Netflix needed a way to customize the user experience to make it easier for their subscribers to find relevant programs.

They found their solution through an ML-based recommendation algorithm, allowing Netflix to curate the pages of every individual user with relevant content. Used to identify what a subscriber is watching, every piece of content on Netflix has a set of labels: genre, cast, rating, success and acclaim, etc. Netflix’s algorithm will look at a subscriber’s implicit and explicit data: watch, search, and rating history, which will be used to feed relevant content onto subscribers’ pages. Moreover, Netflix will look for subscribers with similar watch history and recommend a program to the entire group if enough like-minded subscribers have watched it.

    Customizing user interface

Once Netflix gets the right content in front of subscribers, they are faced with another challenge–get the subscriber to click on the content that is being recommended. Their strategy to get subscribers to engage with recommended content is to adjust the movie posters to fit the interests of the user. The movie poster could feature a different set of actors/actresses to fit more in line with a subscriber’s interest, or an image to suggest the film is scarier for horror movie enthusiasts.

To achieve success in targeting movie posters to each subscriber, Netflix uses machine learning (ML). After trial and error with batch learning and A/B testing, Netflix landed on using contextual bandits to lead their ML framework. Contextual bandits test out a number of predicted actions and can learn which will have the most favorable outcome.

Netflix uses training data obtained from randomization in the model’s predictions. Netflix calls this their data operation stage–when the number of poster images and the number of subscribers that they use will be applied to dictate how broad the data exploration stage becomes. Posters are then randomly applied to different subscribers’ dashboards, and the contextual bandits learn which poster has the most favorable outcome for each kind of user.

    Improve video quality

Netflix’s large subscriber base, both in number of subscribers and number of countries, access Netflix on different signals and devices. The challenge for Netflix has become to engineer a way to ensure the premium quality of their content.

Bandwidth and network quality are hard to predict, but huge indicators of the quality-level of the content streamed. Netflix’s goal was to be able to predict both in order to deliver their subscribers a better watching experience: time spent waiting for video to play, quality of content, and buffer time.

Netflix has made itself accessible on a number of different devices, which are constantly expanding. ML-based prediction algorithms are used to avoid any issues when deploying Netflix on a new device. Using subscriber’s history log of issues that have arisen by new devices, Netflix’s algorithm can determine if a given set of conditions is likely to cause a problem.

    Closing

Netflix was able to increase user engagement using ML as a staple part of their software. Generating personal recommendations, displaying title cards fit for each subscriber, and deploying prediction models all lead to the high watch times across subscribers. Being the first streaming service to heavily use machine learning propelled Netflix to become the leader in the increasingly competitive streaming industry.

  • Mathematics For Machine Learning

    Mathematics For Machine Learning

Machine learning is powered by four critical concepts and is Statistics, Linear Algebra, Probability, and Calculus. While statistical concepts are the core part of every model, calculus helps us learn and optimize a model.

Behind every ML success there is Mathematics. All ML models are constructed using solutions and ideas from math. The purpose of ML is to create models for understanding thinking.

There are many reasons why the mathematics of Machine Learning is important, and I’ll highlight some of them below: Selecting the right algorithm which includes giving considerations to accuracy, training time, model complexity, number of parameters and number of features.

Is Mathematics for machine Learning Enough ?

Learning math will slow you down

But you certainly don’t need that knowledge to drive. Similarly, many ML writers recommend covering several math topics before implementing machine learning. And while well-intentioned, it’s not the advice you need right now.

There are many math subjects out there, but there are 6 subjects that matter the most when we are starting learning machine learning math, and that is: Linear Algebra. Analytic Geometry. Matrix Decomposition.

Can I do Machine Learning without math ?

Machine learning is not just for the mathematical elite. You can learn how machine learning algorithms work and how to get the most from them without diving deep into multivariate statistics. You do not need to be good at math

Because math involves using plenty of multi-step processes to solve problems, being able to master it takes a lot more practice than other subjects. Having to repeat a process over and over again can quickly bore some children and this may make them become impatient with math.

    5. Enables you to learn in a secure environment

Internships provide a secure setting in which you can learn and develop professionally. As they begin their professional careers, many interns work closely with mentors, allowing them to learn more about their strengths and weaknesses.

If the intern makes a mistake, this also helps create learning opportunities because it makes sure they know what went wrong and how to fix it, making them a professional who is ready for their career.

    6. Allows you to learn while earning money

Many businesses offer paid internships. This allows you to earn money while gaining entry-level experience, despite the fact that your earnings may vary and frequently be lower than those of regular employees. This may likewise be useful for permitting you to zero in on your examinations and entry level position will in any case have the option to monetarily support yourself.

    7. Enables you to earn college credit

Microsoft Power BI is a business intelligence (BI) platform that provides nontechnical business users with tools for aggregating, analyzing, visualizing and sharing data. Power BI’s user interface is fairly intuitive for users familiar with Excel, and its deep integration with other Microsoft products makes it a versatile self-service tool that requires little upfront training.

    Common uses of Power BI

Microsoft Power BI is used to find insights within an organization’s data. Power BI can help connect disparate data sets, transform and clean the data into a data model and create charts or graphs to provide visuals of the data. All of this can be shared with other Power BI users within the organization.

The data models created from Power BI can be used in several ways for organizations, including the following:

    • telling stories through charts and data visualizations;
    • examining “what if” scenarios within the data; and
    • creating reports that can answer questions in real time and help with forecasting to make sure departments meet business metrics.

Power BI can also provide executive dashboards for administrators or managers, giving management more insight into how departments are doing.

    Who uses Power BI?

Though Power BI is a self-service BI tool that brings data analytics to employees, it’s mostly used by data analysts and BI professionals who create the data models before disseminating reports throughout the organization. However, those without an analytical background can still navigate Power BI and create reports.

Microsoft Power BI is used by both department reps and management, with reports and forecasts created to aid sales and marketing reps, while also providing data for management on how the department or individual employees are progressing toward their goals.

    Key features of Power BI

Microsoft has added a number of data analytics features to Power BI since its inception, and continues to do so. Some of the most important features are the following:

    • Artificial intelligence. Users can access image recognition and text analytics in Power BI, create machine learning models using automated ML capabilities and integrate with Azure Machine Learning.
    • Hybrid deployment support. This feature provides built-in connectors that allow Power BI tools to connect with a number of different data sources from Microsoft, Salesforce and other vendors.
    • Quick Insights. This feature allows users to create subsets of data and automatically apply analytics to that information.
    • Common data model support. Power BI’s support for the common data model allows the use of a standardized and extensible collection of data schemas (entities, attributes and relationships).
    • Cortana integration. This feature, which is especially popular on mobile devices, allows users to verbally query data using natural language and access results using Cortana, Microsoft’s digital assistant.
    • Customization. This feature allows developers to change the appearance of default visualization and reporting tools and import new tools into the platform.
    • APIs for integration. This feature provides developers with sample code and application program interfaces (APIs) for embedding the Power BI dashboard in other software products.
    • Self-service data prep. Using Power Query, business analysts can ingest, transform, integrate and enrich big data into the Power BI web service. Ingested data can be shared across multiple Power BI models, reports and dashboards.

Modeling view. This allows users to divide complex data models by subject area into separate diagrams, multiselect objects and set common properties, view and modify properties in the properties pane, and set display folders for simpler consumption of complex data models.

Data science is a fast-growing industry that’s constantly evolving, which makes it both rewarding and demanding for its practitioners. Newcomers and senior data scientists alike must be willing to keep learning and improving in order to stay valuable and progress in their careers.

However, this is easier said than done. Which skills are the most important to develop, and how should you go about developing them? To help you find the answer to this question, we’ve put together this guide covering all the major skills you need to either start or grow your career in data science.

Are There Any Must-Have Data Science Skills?

Yes. To be a data scientist, you’ll need to be able to gather and analyze data, then present your findings. This includes technical skills such as programming, manipulating databases, advanced mathematics, and data visualization, along with soft skills like collaboration and public speaking.

Technical Skills for a Data Science Career

Data science is a fast-growing industry that’s constantly evolving, which makes it both rewarding and demanding for its practitioners. Newcomers and senior data scientists alike must be willing to keep learning and improving in order to stay valuable and progress in their careers.

However, this is easier said than done. Which skills are the most important to develop, and how should you go about developing them? To help you find the answer to this question, we’ve put together this guide covering all the major skills you need to either start or grow your career in data science.

    Programming Languages

Programming skills are essential for data scientists because it’s how we communicate with computers and give them instructions. While hundreds of programming languages exist, some of them are more suited to data science than others.

Here are some of the most popular and well-used programming languages for data science.

    Python Programming

Python is a general-purpose programming language that’s popular across a range of different sectors, including data science, web development, and game development.

Thanks to the large community of Python users, there are thousands of libraries available that can cover just about any data science task you can think of. Here are some popular examples:

Pandas: a library for manipulating databases

NumPy: a library for basic and advanced array operations

Matplotlib: a library for generating data visualizations

There are many beginner’s courses for learning Python, both for general-purpose and for specific data science tasks.

    R Programming

R is an open-source language specifically designed for data science. It can be used for statistical computing and machine learning, plus data manipulation and visualization.

Besides Python, it’s the most popular language for doing data science, and also benefits from a large community of contributing users. Some of the most commonly-used R libraries belong to the Tidyverse group.

    .

    SQL

Structured Query Language (SQL) is a domain-specific language specially designed for interacting with databases. Rather than competing with Python and R, this language is used alongside them to edit and extract data from different relational databases.

SQL has a simple and straightforward syntax which is much easier to learn, as compared to a lot of other languages. Introductory SQL courses are available from all sorts of providers, such as IBM, Google, and various universities.

    Mathematics, Statistical Analysis, and Probability

While mathematical skills are often not necessary for general-purpose coding, data science is another story. Calculus, algebra, probability, and statistics are the four mathematical areas that matter the most in data science.

If you already have high school mathematics under your belt, all you need to do is build on that strong foundation. Data science mathematics courses can be found on sites like Coursera, and these will help guide your study and develop a deep understanding.

    Data Mining

Data mining refers to the gathering, sorting, and analyzing of large datasets. Within large sets, there’s plenty of not-so-useful data mixed in with the gold nuggets that are going to provide valuable insights.

Through various mining techniques like linear regression analysis, clustering analysis, and anomaly detection, data scientists can sort and analyze data from different perspectives to get the insights they need.

Data mining is an indeterminate data scientist skill that is often taught within a comprehensive career-focused course.

    Machine Learning and AI

While any data scientist should be familiar with the basic concepts of machine learning, deep learning, and AI, these areas actually count as separate specializations. These areas do overlap. Machine learning requires data delivered by data science to train its algorithms, as data science uses a range of deep learning and machine learning models, such as decision trees and predictive models, to mine data.

    Familiarity With Hadoop

Hadoop is an open-source framework that allows you to process large datasets more efficiently by using a network of many computers, rather than just one. Data scientists that often work with particularly large data sets will use this tool regularly, so it’s good to be familiar with it.

    Data Visualization

Visualizing data is an important part of communicating the insights you’ve uncovered as a data scientist. Essentially, it’s the process of turning data into tables, pie charts, bar charts, scatter plots, heat maps, and other visualizations that help us comprehend information.

Data visualization can be done using various visualization tools, from creating visualizations directly in Python, or using software like Tableau. Data storytelling and presenting insights is as much the job of a data scientist as uncovering the insights, so visualizations and presentation skills are covered in many data science bootcamps.

    Business Strategy

In order to unearth insights that will be genuinely useful for stakeholders and decision-makers, data scientists need to have a good understanding of business strategy themselves. These skills are taught as part of any good data science bootcamp, and you’ll also learn a lot through direct experience on the job.

Cloud ComputingThe data that data scientists use isn’t stored directly on the computer in front of them. Instead, big data is typically stored through cloud computing, so knowing how to interact with the cloud, and understanding the basic principles of how it works, can be a useful skills for data scientists.

  • Soft Skills for Data Science Career

Soft Skills for Data Science Career

Of course, Technical skills are not the only thing a data scientist needs to be successful. Collaborating with colleagues and other departments and presenting key insights to stakeholders is also part of the role, and these tasks require a range of non-technical skills (or soft skills).

    Communication

Communicating clearly and respectfully is the key to building good working relationships and getting the information you need as efficiently as possible. Whether you’re an aspiring data scientist or already working, make sure to get involved with group projects to start polishing your communication skills.

    Analytical Mindset

Thinking objectively and analytically helps data scientists approach problems thoroughly and from every angle before forming opinions and assumptions. This keeps their work accurate and unbiased and helps them to know when they need to dig deeper to find the whole story.

Developing an analytical mindset and critical thinking skills takes time, and the best way to do it is through hands-on practice with data science projects and work.

    “Out-of-the-Box” Thinking

An important part of data science is framing the right questions, as well as finding the right answers. Data is intricate and expansive, and there are many ways it can tell us what we want to know, so thinking outside of the box can often help a data scientist find a new lead and unearth powerful new insights.

You’ll develop this skill naturally with time and experience, and by listening to colleagues’ and seniors’ experiences.

    Decision Making

Working independently is a very valued skill for data scientists. Stakeholders and managers want their data science team to go away and come back with the desired insights without having to be micromanaged.

    Collaboration

Teamwork is an important part of data science, and learning to listen to others and utilize their input is an essential skill. Collaboration can increase working efficiency, minimize mistakes, and improve the overall quality of work.

If you’re currently learning data science, finding a team or partner to work on projects with is a great way to get a head start on building your interpersonal skills.

    Storytelling

Storytelling is a term used for presenting data and insights to non-technical colleagues in order to persuade them to see the value of your conclusions and act on your suggestions. It’s a skill that blends public speaking, business acumen, and data visualization to create a relevant, clear, and persuasive story.

You can practice this skill independently, by putting together presentations for your personal projects as if you had a group of managers to report to.

    Attention to Detail

The conclusions data scientists come to completely depend on the data they’re drawing upon and how they’re looking at it. Having an eye for detail is a crucial skill that helps them approach a problem from all angles, and explore different possibilities in order to uncover the most accurate information.

    Continuous Learning

While you don’t need to go off and earn an advanced degree halfway through your career, the willingness to keep learning is a mark of a valuable data scientist and employee. The fields of data science and machine learning are constantly evolving, and you need to stay up to date and keep learning to stay ahead of the game.
